Dear Anglers,

Somebody must have known something beforehand as a crowd of 40 teams arrived at El Capitan for the third leg of the El Cajon Ford Day Series. Despite unpleasant weather forecasts (that proved true with five hours of constant rainfall) the fish bit with abandon.

With a morning flurry for most teams and a mid-day spike as well, catching a “decent limit” was just not good enough. The top five teams were all superb, weighing at least 19 pounds each.

Taking top honors was the father/son team of Jon and Wade Strelic who posted 22.05 pounds, topped by a 5.12-pound largemouth, and earning $2700.
Said the elder Strelic, “We just had one of those days. It was real good in the morning, fishing reaction.” But it clearly got better as the day went on, as he noted, “We fished structure in 20 to 25 feet, fairly deep and the shallowest about 18 feet.
Of the five they weighed, he added, “All were on worms, one on a jig.”

The runner-up team of John Bell and Craig Taylor was carried by Bell who fished solo and weighed in 21.05 pounds, anchored by a 5.74 pounder, earning $1250. It was a one-man show on a solitary piece of cover. Said Bell, “All of my fish came off one rock. I was done by 10 o’clock.”

Third place went to Kevin Norling and Stephen Lamb, last year’s AOY in the Day Series. Their bag weighed 20.19 pounds, topped by a 4.58-pounder and came in the morning as well. Revealed Norling, “We caught two on blades and the rest on cranks, early. Only had one bite the rest of the day.”

Another father/son team, Mike and Kevin Martin, combined for 20.14 pounds for fourth place, while Chip Gilbert and Lester Albury captured fifth place with 19.12 pounds. Their fifth place finish lifted them into the top spot in the point standings.

Biggest bass of the contest went to Tim Sotola, fishing with partner Herman De La Garza. His 6.35-pounder, worth $500, came on a 7-inch worm in the dam arm in 20 feet of water. The big bass lifted the team’s weight to 17.78 pounds, good for 10th place.

We would like to thank all the teams that participated in the tournament and supporting the El Cajon Ford Day Series. We want to thank John Blake & Paul Dyke from El Cajon Ford for their continued support of the San Diego Team Series. Without their support, the El Cajon Ford Day Series would not be possible and we can’t thank these two individuals enough for all that they do for the bass fishing community.

If you looking for new or used vehicle please stop by EL Cajon Ford Dealership and ask for Klayton Belden he will take care of you. Please keep in mind, that El Cajon Ford has the Quick Lane department, so if you are in need of an oil change or a new set of tires you can stop by and they can get this done while you wait. For more information regarding El Cajon Ford Dealership please visit their website at www.elcajonford.com or give them a call at (619) 579-8888.

In closing, we would like to give a special thanks to our staff members for great start to another great season. Without our dedicated staff, we could not run the best circuit in San Diego.
