Dear Anglers,

The El Cajon Ford - Day Series concluded the season this last weekend holding the Tournament of Champions in which 20 teams competed for the Grand Prize money and the championship honors. The TOC was a free for all 20 teams that competed, so they just needed to show up and fish hard. The teams competed over 2-day fishing both Lake El Capitan and Lake Otay. The scoring for the TOC was done using a points system each day with 1st Place receiving 100 points, 2nd receiving 99 points and so forth.

Day One: Lake El Capitan
On Saturday, the teams fished Lake El Capitan to start off the tournament. The weather was very hot and sunny all day that made for some good fishing conditions for the teams that fished.

Once again, we had another excellent day at Lake El Capitan with some giant stringers of bass throughout the field. This tournament produced six limits of bass weighing over 17lbs. We had 94 bass weighed for a total weight of 280.75lbs with an average weight per team of 12.76lbs.

Over all, the bit was excellent with bass being caught using a variety of different baits. The lake had busting fish all over and most anglers got on top water bit early in the morning to fill their limits. The deep diving crank bait bit was there for those teams that figured throwing the 25’-0” divers into their game plan. As the day went on jig & worms seemed to be the baits of choice for most teams.

The top six teams for the day were Tom Leedom and Matt Menzel leading the first day of the event with 20.15LBS with a kicker bass of the tournament of 5.82lb. We had Todd Holverson and Jason Sleight right behind the leader with 20.14lb. In 3rd position was Stu Hinkle & Ed Woods with 19.43lb. Sitting in 4th position was Chuck Miller and Geoff Pierce with 17.90lbs with big bass of the day of 9.07lbs. In 5th position, we had John Blake and Gene Collins with 17.76lb and 2nd big bass of the day of 8.15lbs. In sixth position, we had Stephen Patek and Jimmy Young with 17.35lbs.

Day Two: Lake Otay
On Sunday, the teams fished Lake Otay to finish off the tournament. The weather was cold in the morning, eventually turning into a nice sunny day that made for some good fishing conditions.

This year, the fishing a Lake Otay has been challenging making the anglers work very hard to produce a quality limit of fish. The average bass weighed-in was in the 2lb range. The bigger bass were harder to come by given the clear water conditions and the lake being very high. We had 78 bass weighed for a total weight of 162.66lbs with an average weight per team of 7.39lbs.

Over all, the bit was good with bass being caught using a variety of different baits. The lake had busting fish all over and most anglers got on a top water bit mid-morning to late afternoon in order to fill their limits. Some teams had a good ice jig bit over by the dam as well as little Georges catch some of the deeper fish that were schooling on the bait.

The top six teams for the day were Chuck Miller and Geoff Pierce with 15.83lbs with a kicker bass of the tournament of 5.50lb. We had Todd Holverson and Jason Sleight right behind the leader with 13.72lb with big bass of the day of 6.48lbs. In 3rd position was John Carver & Mike Walsh with 13.35lb. Sitting in 4th position was Tom Leedom & Matt Menzel with 12.48lbs. In 5th position we had Wayne George & Wayne E. George with 12.40lbs. In sixth position we had Klayton Belden & Paul Leader with 11.74lbs.
